Environmental, Social and Governance

Our approach to sustainability

Sustainability is at the core of our strategy. We implement sustainability measures in all aspects of our operations, and we categorise our sustainability efforts within Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG).

Circularity

At Blue Phoenix, we are determined to reduce reliance on virgin resources by turning waste into value. In 2024, we reintroduced 4.9 million tonnes of recovered materials back into the economy, including 305,000 tonnes of metals. In 2024, we processed more than 5.5 million tonnes of IBAA, soil and C&D waste, preventing significant greenhouse gas emissions and supporting the decarbonisation of the construction and manufacturing sectors.

Climate change

Tackling climate change is one of Blue Phoenix’s top priorities. By treating and valorizing incineration residues, we avoid the landfilling of untreated bottom ash, which would otherwise generate around 0.27 tonnes* of CO₂-equivalent per tonne of residue (mainly from cement use for stabilization and landfill emissions).
At the same time, we are actively reducing our operational footprint: Blue Phoenix generated approximately 90,000 tonnes of CO₂-equivalent, with Scope 1 and 2 emissions accounting for 21% of the total. We consumed 1.85 GWh of low-carbon electricity (15% of our total electricity use) and replaced 31% of onsite fuels with 849,000 litres of certified biofuels (HVO).

*This dataset represents the disposal activity of average incineration residue in a residual material landfill (RMLF).

Ecosystems

Protecting ecosystems is part of our responsibility. By avoiding the landfilling of incineration residues, we reduce the need for extracting and transporting primary raw materials, while also cutting emissions associated with landfill operations. We help limit land use and the demand for new landfill sites – an important issue given their high costs, limited capacity, and the difficulty of opening new sites in densely populated areas.
At the same time, turning waste into a resource creates social value: it generates jobs, supports the local economy, and is widely more acceptable than simply disposing of valuable materials without a second life.

Social sustainability

People are at the heart of Blue Phoenix. In 2024, our strong focus on Health & Safety, continuous Toolbox training, and the work of our Wellbeing Committee further strengthened our safety culture across all sites. Training expansion through the Global Policies Manual, wellness surveys, and local initiatives ensure that our employees feel safe, supported, and heard.
Our objective for 2030 is to harmonize HSE training and guarantee consistent safety and wellbeing standards across all entities, including newly acquired companies, ensuring that every employee benefits from the same high level of protection worldwide.

Governance Sustainability

Sustainability progress is reviewed quarterly by the Group Board, ensuring clear strategic direction. Our governance ensures that our mission is transparent, accountable, and future-oriented. We voluntarily align with CSRD standards and the EU Taxonomy, with 99% of our business activities assessed as environmentally sustainable. In 2025–2026 we are conducting a Double Materiality Assessment (DMA), restructuring our Sustainability Team, and enabling environmental accountability through a recognized ESG platform.

Sustainability Supply Chain

In 2025 we prepared a stakeholder engagement survey to assess sustainability along the value chain. Secondly, stakeholders were invited to complete the double materiality assessment (DMA) form, ensuring their input was considered in the evaluation process and strategic decisions. Our goal is to apply both surveys once a year, so we can better understand where our suppliers, customers, and partners stand, and how they are progressing over time.

Our contribution to the SDGs

We are working to have a positive impact on all 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and have identified these goals where we can make a significant difference:
