Treatment and reuse of surplus soil
Millions of tonnes of surplus soil, contaminated and uncontaminated, are generated each year from construction and infrastructure projects. At Blue Phoenix, we see surplus soil as an important resource that, if handled professionally, may be reused in construction on a large scale as a viable alternative to virgin materials such as sand or gravel. When you start seeing soil as potential, something powerful happens: resources are reborn. Every day, we recover value from materials others discard, and this certainly applies to surplus soil. In Denmark, we treat and reuse more than 2 million tons of surplus soil annually. Read more about innovative surplus soil treatment in Denmark.
Contaminated surplus soil
One of the most significant threats to healthy soils on a global scale is contamination. Soil becomes contaminated due to industrial production, urban influence, diffuse contamination or agriculture. Blue Phoenix specializes in contaminated soil management and soil remediation. We have more than 30 years of experience in dealing with and treating various types of contaminated soil. We operate environmentally approved soil reception and treatment facilities where we manage millions of tons of contaminated soil. Using a Blue Phoenix reception and treatment facility for your contaminated soil is the best guarantee for professional and responsible soil management, in terms of correct classification, treatment and subsequent reuse.
Reuse of contaminated surplus soil
Contamination does not always equal landfill when it comes to soil. Depending on its geotechnical properties and final classification, contaminated soil can be reused following appropriate treatment and risk assessment. Naturally, this should always be done in strict compliance with national and local guidelines and legislation. In many cases, contaminated soil may find application as construction fill, soil berms or other soil recovery projects that permit the use of contaminated soil.
Reuse of uncontaminated surplus soil
Soil washing
Blue Phoenix operates one of the most modern soil washing plants capable of separating sand, gravel and stones from uncontaminated, sandy surplus soil. These reused materials may be used in new construction projects to replace virgin materials.
Lime stabilisation
Clayey soil may be reused as a construction material when 1 to 2% burnt lime is added. This process is called line stabilisation and greatly enhances the properties of soil for construction purposes. Lime stabilised soil can replace virgin materials such as sand or gravel.
Direct geotechnical reuse
Depending on its geotechnical properties, soil may be used directly, without neither prior washing or stabilization, in certain types of construction and infrastructure projects, such as dikes or earthworks.
