IBA processing in the UK
At Blue Phoenix we strongly believe there is no such thing as waste. Our dedicated global team works alongside energy-from-waste operators to recover value from materials once considered unrecyclable. Through advanced separation technologies, we extract metals and refine mineral fractions to produce safe, high-quality construction materials trusted by local authorities and industry partners across the UK. By collaborating with local authorities and contractors, we help divert materials from landfill, lower carbon emissions, and deliver cost-effective aggregates that contribute to the UK’s net-zero and circular-economy goals.
Our presence in the UK
The United Kingdom is Blue Phoenix’s leading market for Incinerator Bottom Ash (IBA) processing and the production of Incinerator Bottom Ash Aggregates (IBAA). Operating in the UK since 1998, we currently manage 10 processing facilities nationwide, collectively handling more than 1.4 million tonnes of IBA each year.
Energy-from-Waste (EfW) facilities are a key component of the UK Government’s strategy for managing municipal solid waste (MSW) and represent a more sustainable alternative to landfill disposal. To date, Blue Phoenix has processed over 13 million tonnes of IBA in the UK and continues to work closely with regulators to ensure that environmental protection remains central to all our operations.
Quality control and certification
Quality and reliability are central to our operations. The IBA is monitored through in-house laboratory testing to ensure that metal recovery is optimised and mineral fractions are produced according to the precise specifications required for construction applications. Our processes are certified under ISO 9001, ISO 14001, and ISO 45001 standards, guaranteeing consistent product quality and environmental compliance.
From IBA to aggregates
The mineral fractions recovered during IBA processing are transformed into IBA Aggregates (IBAA), certified and quality-tested materials used across the UK in various applications. Learn more about our aggregates and their application here.
