Sustainable solutions for
asphalt & roofing felt waste
Road renovations, infrastructure upgrades, and building refurbishments produce significant volumes of asphalt waste, requiring controlled processing due to their high content of regulated substances. Countries across Europe, including Germany, face increasing pressure to reduce landfill dependency and manage hazardous construction materials safely. Blue Phoenix provides a trusted, large-scale solution for handling tar-containing asphalt and roofing felt waste from Germany, ensuring regulatory compliance and complete material and energy recovery through our advanced treatment facility in the Netherlands.
Our worldwide thermal treatment operations
We operate one of Europe's most advanced thermal treatment networks, with large-scale facilities capable of handling significant volumes of asphalt and roofing waste. Our thermal treatment facility in the Netherlands is the central location of our European asphalt and roofing waste operations. From countries such as Germany, Switzerland, Italy, UK, Austria, Belgium, and Ireland, materials are transported to this state-of-the-art location, where they are processed safely, efficiently, and in full compliance with environmental standards. We support our partners across the region with reliable capacity and consistent quality.
Materials we process
Our facilities are designed to handle challenging materials that require specialist processing, ensuring they are transformed into valuable secondary resources rather than becoming a disposal burden. Whether the need is for consistent yearly volumes or large one-off project loads, we have the capacity and expertise to support you.
Tar-containing asphalt
We accept a wide range of tar-bound and PAH-contaminated asphalt from roadworks, resurfacing, milling, and infrastructure upgrades. Once received at our facilities, the material undergoes controlled high-temperature treatment, where contaminants are safely removed and the mineral fraction is fully recovered for reuse.
This provides road authorities and contractors with a compliant solution while ensuring the material continues its life in new construction.
Roofing felt waste
We process tar-roofing to a high grade.
Tar-roofing felt often contains polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). In the thermal treatment plant, these PAHs are completely destroyed by high-temperature incineration. The hot flue gases released in this incineration process are used to generate steam and electricity, just as they are when processing tar-containing asphalt. Then they are cleaned in the flue gas cleaning system. The energy content in the tar-roofing felt also provides a significant saving in the consumption of natural gas required for the thermal cleaning of asphalt. The recovery of energy and its beneficial use leads to huge reductions in CO2 emissions.
Turning high-risk waste into safe, high-quality resources
At our dedicated thermal treatment facilities, materials go through a controlled, multi-stage treatment process designed to neutralise pollutants and maximise circular value.
- Harmful tar substances are safely destroyed.
- Mineral fractions are cleaned and recovered.
- Energy released during treatment is used for heating and electricity production.
This integrated approach means nothing is wasted – every tonne of tar-containing asphalt is turned into either a safe product or useful energy.
With our annual production capacity of 1.8 million tonnes, Blue Phoenix operated the Europe’s largest thermal treatment plants, ensuring reliable, large-scale solutions for all our partners.
